Life can throw curveballs—an injury, a serious illness, or an unexpected accident. PTMA offers Enhanced Protection benefits that provide extra financial protection beyond your core medical coverage.
Accident and Critical Illness Insurance plans help offset out-of-pocket costs that may arise from unexpected health events. These benefits pay cash directly to you, giving you added flexibility to manage expenses like deductibles, household bills, or recovery costs.
Accident and Critical Illness insurance plans are administered by Unum and are portable if you change jobs.
Accidents can happen when you least expect them. Accident Insurance provides a cash benefit if you or a covered family member experiences a covered injury—such as a broken bone, concussion, or dislocation. Hospitalization, physical therapy, intensive care, transportation and lodging are some of the out-of-pocket expenses that this accident insurance could cover. You can use the payment however you choose—to help cover medical bills, childcare, or everyday expenses while you recover.
Coverage is available for you, your spouse (if you purchase coverage for yourself), and/or your child(ren) to age 26.
| Injury/Treatment | Example Payout |
|---|---|
| Knee injury - requiring surgery | $1,650 |
| Outpatient surgical facility benefit | $300 |
| General anesthesia | $250 |
| Physician follow-up visits | Up to $150 |
| Prescription drug benefit | $25 |
| Physical therapy | Up to $300 |
| Total Payout | Up to $2,675 |
Organized Sports Benefit
Each family member who has Accident coverage is eligible for a 10% increase in payable benefits within the Injury and Treatment schedule of benefit categories if an injury happens while playing an organized sport. See the schedule of benefits for more information.
A serious illness can bring not only health challenges but also financial ones. Critical Illness Insurance pays a lump-sum benefit directly to you if you’re diagnosed with a covered condition, such as a heart attack, stroke, or cancer. The benefit can help with costs your medical plan doesn’t cover, from out-of-pocket medical bills to household or travel expenses. Even after you receive a payout for one illness, you’re still covered for the remaining conditions and for the recurrence of most critical illnesses.
Examples of covered conditions. See the Schedule of Benefits for a full list of covered conditions.
| Covered Person | Coverage |

Children are covered for all the same illnesses, plus these specific childhood conditions: cerebral palsy, cleft lip or palate, cystic fibrosis, Down syndrome and spina bifida. The diagnosis must occur after the child’s coverage effective date.
Each year, every family member who has Critical Illness and/or Accident coverage can receive $50 per year for completing a covered Be Well Benefit screening test—such as a cholesterol test, colonoscopy, or annual physical. If you and/or your spouse and child(ren) are enrolled in both plans, you could each earn up to $100 per person per year in rewards for completing eligible screenings, such as:
